Afghanistan-Family has been here about three months. (This is our UUCC family.)

  1. Hamidullah S., father, worked with U.S. military in logistics in the warehouse; speaks some English. He is working at 7-11 now and after several months there, he is looking for a better job.
  2. Shaheen S., wife, wants to learn English.
  3. Abubaker S., son, 3 years old, wears a size 4T. Needs summer clothes.
  4. Faisal S., son, 12 months old, wears size 18-24 months. Needs diapers size 15-25 pounds [Needs summer clothes also!]

Afghanistan-

  1. Hakeem M. worked with USAID and military in Afghanistan and is completing an MBA degree online. Wants job as assistant manager, has negotiating skills and speaks multiple languages including English.
  2. Robina, wife. New daughter born February 10th. Wants to learn English Alphabet and English. She is an expert seamstress and loves the new sewing machine we bought for her.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Syria-Family lived in Egypt for four years before coming to U.S.

  1. Bassam A., father. He and oldest son worked designing and sewing women’s clothing in Egypt using special software for the design. He would like a similar job here. However, he must have a job of some kind very soon. He speaks just a little English and is eagerly learning more.
  2. Sameera A., wife, is speaking a little English already and wants to learn more.
  3. Mohammed Waseem, age 20 and in will be in the 11thgrade at Hermitage High School in September. Now working at Dairy Queen and is learning English there.
  4. Ranem, Age 16. Attends Hermitage high school in the 11th grade and is eager to learn English.
  5. Moumin, son age 14 in 8th Is eager to learn English and now has a PC that Henrico County has given him and he loves to translate English words into Arabic words on Google Translate. Favorite soccer team is Madrid; C. Ronaldo is favorite player. He needs help with homework.
  6. Rafif, daughter age 9, 4th grade here in September. Eager to learn English. Needs help with homework. Has been loaned a computer and loves drawing on it.
  7. Grandmother, Zainab, age 80. Speaks no English and has some health problems but smiles a lot! She places her right hand over her heart to say “Thank you.”

The families listed above are our “official” adopted families from Church World Services. We also tutor families in English through CWS and they have several small children, so direct your questions about how you can help with clothing to Mary Virginia Currie merryvac@gmail.com.

 

New or used sewing machines are wanted by women so they can earn money at home. Used machines must be in good working order.
