MUSICAL GROUPS

Music has always been woven into the spirit of UUCC. The music program energizes our Unitarian Universalist Sunday service messages. Playing together also allows us to share uplifting experiences at rehearsals and special events during the week. Our singers and instrumentalists support our Richmond, area community in times of joy and sorrow such as wedding ceremonies and memorial services. Our staff music director, a classically trained pianist, heightens our services with moving piano solos and adeptly leads and accompanies voice and instrumental ensembles.

Sanctuary Choir:

Come sing with us! We provide engaging and topical music for our worship services once or twice a month. We are always accepting new singers of any voice range and experience level. Our Music Director, Jonathan Corey, would love to hear you soon at a Thursday evening rehearsal.

Hymn Jammers:

The Hymn Jammers accompany hymns and play interludes during the Sunday service. The ensemble includes guitars, bass, flutes, violins, trumpets, recorders, and a concertina. No audition is required, and the ensemble is open to any instrument and all instrumentalists. So, get your instrument ready to jam and email our band leader, Jonathan Corey.

TUUsday Singers:

This daytime choral group is a wonderful way for newcomers quickly to make connections at church. Singers who prefer to avoid driving at night, love TUUsday Singers. Evening choir members, who want extra practice, also join us. It’s a musical midday getaway for parents whose kids are in school. Led by experienced, patient lay leaders, this friendly group makes it fun to ease into choir singing again or for the first time.

UUCC Ringers:

UUCC Ringers play the church’s three-octave set of Schulmerich handbells. This bell-ringing ensemble meets once a month and contributes to the Sunday services on special occasions. No audition is required. Our handbell ringers welcome newcomers and provide patient training for beginners. For more information about our handbells ensemble, get in touch with Jonathan Corey.

Works in Progress Music Group:

UUCC folk, classical, and jazz musicians perform short pieces. We welcome players on all instruments and at all levels. This musical group aims to support each other wherever we may be in our musical journey. Pianists, come try out our new grand piano or new electronic keyboard.

Cauthorne Consort Recorder Ensemble:

The Cauthorne Consort performs village and classical recorder music at services, weddings, and parties in Central Virginia. The ensemble includes soprano, alto, tenor, and bass recorders. Experienced recorder players who read music are invited to join them.

We are expanding our drumming ensemble and would love to have you join us. We have a variety of percussion instruments, including HAPI drums. We play with the hymn jammers at services, provide music for labyrinth walks, and circle round our backyard firepit.

The music program is always interested in adding new participants as well as hearing new ideas.  Please email Jonathan Corey to add your voice!

More groups for kindred creatives

Visual Artists:

An ongoing display of visual art enhances the spiritual atmosphere of our worship space. Artists in our congregation and community are invited to contribute to our Sanctuary Arts Gallery. Reach out to our helpful curators.

Play Readers:

Develop your dramatic skills and make new friends at our monthly informal play-reading gatherings. Theater folks who enjoy performing have opportunities to share short pieces at our Open Mic Showcase, worship services, and readers’ theater performances. Ask for the Play Readers’ leader at church or let Jonathan Corey know you’re interested in an email.

Creative Writers:

The Chickahominy Grits Wordcrafters (Grits) want to grow! This writers’ group is open to those in our UU church community who love to write and hang out with other literary folks. For more information about our literary activities, email Jonathan Corey, and a Grit will reach out to you. Better yet, on Sunday morning, ask a Hymn Jammer. Many of us are writers, too.

Open Mic Performers:

Musicians, singers, storytellers, actors, dancers, magicians, and poets in our UU congregation share their creative talents at our Open Mic Showcases. Contact our Music & Arts Committee or ask any dramatic reader, singer, or musician next Sunday how you can be part of the fun.
