What is Unitarian Universalism?

Unitarian Universalism (UU) is a liberal religion where we don’t have to think alike to love alike. We are a “theology of the deed, not the creed.” We are united by our shared values and a “free and responsible search for truth and meaning.”
Our Values in Action
Unitarian Universalist congregations are committed to a core of Love. We live this faith out loud by practicing six primary values that guide how we treat one another and the world:
- Justice & Equity: We work to be diverse, multicultural, and accountably dismantle racism and other oppressions.
- Interdependence: We honor the sacred net of all existence and our commitment to the Earth.
- Pluralism: We celebrate that our different histories and beliefs make our community stronger.
- Transformation: We are open to the change that comes from spiritual growth.
- Generosity & Compassion: We share our resources and spirits to help a world in need.
We are an 8th Principle Congregation
UUCC Glen Allen has formally adopted the 8th Principle. This is our commitment to go beyond “welcome” and move toward active liberation. We covenant to affirm and promote:
“Journeying toward spiritual wholeness by working to build a diverse multicultural Beloved Community by our actions that accountably dismantle racism and other oppressions in ourselves and our institutions.”
This commitment is reflected in our ongoing work with the UUA initiative “Widening the Circle of Concern,” ensuring our congregation is a place of true belonging and equity for people of all races, ethnicities, abilities, and identities.
Our Roots and History
Our faith tradition is both ancient and radical. We grew from the union of two progressive Christian groups: the Universalists (organized in 1793) and the Unitarians (organized in 1825). They joined to become the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) in 1961.
Today, we draw inspiration from many sources: from sacred texts to scientific reason, and from the words of prophetic people throughout history. Whether you identify as a theist, atheist, agnostic, or a seeker of any kind, there is a place for you here.
